What to know about the session

My first priority is to make this experience enjoyable for you. I keep things very relaxed and upbeat, and most importantly, natural. I shoot at my place in West Hollywood where I hope you feel comfortable and at home. It is important you get a good night’s sleep so you look well rested and feel energized. Keep in mind this is a collaborative process.  It's hard for me to get a good idea of everything you're about in the ten minutes we have before we start shooting, so let me know if you think there's something you do that I'm not covering. The same goes for taking breaks - your face is going to feel weird and stiff after a long period of making faces. Lemme know, we'll take a break. The last thing I want this process to be is uncomfortable. 

How to prepare for the session

Before the shoot, we will have a short phone or email consultation to insure you get the most out of your session. We can talk about what you are looking for in your headshots, what you're representation needs, etc.

Once you've decided to schedule your session, a $125 deposit is due to reserve your appointment. This deposit is non-refundable and will be applied towards your session fee. You may mail your deposit, bring me cash, or pay by credit card/PayPal (there is an additional fee for credit card and PayPal payments).

It is important you get a good night’s sleep because we want you to look well rested and feel energized. The shoot itself will be super casual. I shoot in my garage while you are seated and change backgrounds as needed.

Wardrobe

Ladies - Please bring 2-3 spaghetti strap tanks or dresses of various colors or patterns, including white (if you have it), a business/upscale look (button down shirt or blouse), business casual look(think "The Office), a hip/cool look (think "Sex and The City" or "Friends"), and one mainstream look (Gap or Banana Republic casual). Also, please wear a neutral bra.

Guys - Please bring 3-5 tee shirts with different neck lines (if you have them), a business/upscale look (button down shirt you would wear with nice slacks), a business casual look (think "The Office"), hip/edgy look (scruff or clean shaven, jeans and tee shirt type look), a mainstream look (Gap or Banana Republic casual) and a blue collar look (denim or flannel shirt).

If you want to do a three day beard, no problem. Just bring your shaving stuff with you so we can switch to a clean shaven look.

General Wardrobe Tips

- Try to pick colors that compliment your eye color, skin tone, etc. Bring a variation of neutrals and colors that pop. Guys, stand out by making bold choices with your shirt and tie combos.

- Stay away from tight stripes and shirts with logos or sayings, a la Urban Outfitter joke tees.

- Make sure any collared shirts are pressed and try to stay away from shirts with worn out necklines. Hang your tees up the night before to soften fold marks or iron them.

- You'll never see below your waist so wear pants and shoes that are comfortable and that you feel good in. Try to wear sneakers - you'll be going up and down stairs.

- If you have glasses, bring them! The perfect glasses either have non reflective lenses or are old glasses with no lenses at all. If you don't have either of those, still bring your glasses but just know there will be some glare in the lenses.

Makeup

Ladies - If you’re doing your own hair and makeup, please come camera ready and bring the necessary items for touch ups. For more tips on makeup, click here. 

I don't recommend going to your salon for a cut or color the day the shoot. Even getting your hair styled can be an issue. In my experience, most appointments run late, and not because of the stylist but because of previous appointments. Unless you are the first appointment of the day, consider having your hair done by our stylist on location.

If you are using our hair and makeup service, please bring some of your own makeup. Our artist has supplies, but it’s helpful to know what you use on a day-to-day basis.Your make-up artist will stay on set the entire shoot and will work with you through changes. $150 includes two makeup looks, touch-ups and light hair-styling. Full hair styling is an additional $50 and each additional look is $25. 

Guys - Please bring your shaving gear if you're planning on shooting photos with some scruff. If you have hair care products you use, bring those too, along with lip balm. I recommend using our makeup artist if this is your first time getting headshots. It's $100 and includes makeup and hair styling and retouches through your session.

Following the session

Once we've wrapped your session, the remainder of your balance is due. You can pay with cash or credit card /PayPal (there is an additional fee for credit card and PayPal payments). If you'd like to pay wih a check please be aware the photos will be sent after the check has cleared.

Photos are processed and sent to you on a DVD no later than one week after your session. Rush orders (1 day turnaround) are an additional $50. Please check your disk as soon as you get it. Your photos are stored for 10 days after they are mailed, then they are deleted. If you notify me that there is an issue with the disk after the 10 days, I will reshoot your photos for $200.

I recommend you get your prints done at Pixels LA (you can upload them directly to their site) on Melrose or Argentum on Sunset (you will have to bring your disk in to them); they’re super nice and have great turnaround time.


Cancellations

I understand that last minute changes happen. Please call as soon as possible and we’ll reschedule. I’ll reschedule your session once. If you cancel a second time, the deposit turns into a cancellation fee and we start all over again.

Since I use natural light, sometimes it's necessary to move your session if the weather is too overcast or due to rain. For the most part I know a few days in advance and will let you know as soon as I can.

Three years ago my friend Kerry asked me to take headshots of her. I did. Now I do them for lots of other people. 

I like for my sessions to be California style. - chill, no pressure, and fun. Here's what people are saying about me:

My trip to Erin's studio was my first time getting headshots (really acting in front of a camera at all) and she did an amazing job of walking me through the process, helping me make a "look" from the wardrobe I brought, and posing me in some fun and different ways.

She got a great mix of very formal (solid color background, normal expressions) and fun shots (some outdoor urban scenes, etc) so that I would have a variety of backgrounds to work from. For great, solid, straight-ahead, attractive yet unique, professional headshots Erin Gibson is it!  I've had my headshots taken by at least 5 different photographers before going to Erin.  She's the first to capture the most amazing and genuine shots of me.  Her process is so no-nonsense it makes sense.  She's efficient, so you don't get stuck feeling tired halfway through the shoot.  She's great at picking what clothes will help sell "a look". Her use of natural light is so skilled I only had to photoshop a fly-away hair or two.  The usual face clean up was unnecessary (YAY!).  Did I mention funny?  She's too funny and fun to work with as well. Oh and since using these new photos, I've actually gotten compliments for the first time on my headshots from casting directors.  Awesome!

P.S.-I am not exactly the most photogenic, so the fact that she was able to make my face look good was a big bonus. :-)
